Colleges are breeding grounds for a whole lot of things. One of the things that college fosters a love for is…THE GROUP.
You know what I mean; the singing groups, political groups, volunteering groups, and sports groups. It always seems, from afar, as though most colleges have got a group for everyone. I, however, disagree. Had I only had the motivation and school spirit in me to start my own groups while in college, there would have been a whole new clump of groups to add to the group roster. Those sentiments precisely are what bring me to my first group:
The I WOULD START A GROUP OF MY OWN IF I WEREN’T SO LAZY group
I feel as though this group should exist. How many of us out there have had our own ideas for groups but we haven’t started them because we were just too damn lazy? Think about the possibilities. We could all gather each week and discuss why we didn’t gather during the prior week. We could all voyage to the local bar for drinks after group meetings because we were too lazy to bring our own alcohol. I could have used some like-minded friends during school and I think that launching this group would have helped me.
The I’M NOT REALLY GOING TO QUIT DRINKING group
I didn’t want to have friends who were apocalyptic drinkers with no conscience, I didn’t want to have friends who were straight edge, and I also didn’t want to have friends who were moderate drinkers. While I was in college, I wanted friends who drank too much, but had a conscience about it. I wanted self-destructive friends who knew that their drinking was bad, advocated quitting, but never planned on quitting themselves. This should be a group in college.
The WE CAN’T WATCH TV WITHOUT OUR LAPTOPS group
Is this a growing epidemic? I vote yes. In fact, I’m watching TV with my laptop on my legs at this moment. I’ve gotten to the point where I really can’t just watch TV without doing something on the computer. Is this a problem? I doubt it, but I would still like some friends who share this quality with me. We could all ‘hang out’ while on our laptops. Imagine that raging party.
The I DON’T CARE ABOUT POLITICS UNLESS I WANT TO COMPLAIN group
I know, I know, it’s wrong. As a college student, you should be politically active. You should choose a side and fight! And if you don’t choose a side, you should be Independent and be passionate about THAT. You know how everyone says you can’t complain if you don’t vote? Nah, I don’t agree. BUT those of us who like to complain while not voting could at least complain to each other if we had a group for our kind, right?
The MY PARENTS FORCED ME TO GO TO COLLEGE SO I’M MAJORING IN ART group
Parents forcing teens to attend college is old news. It happened to me and it probably happened to a lot of you, too. But you have to be a certain degree of obnoxious to retaliate by majoring in art. This is what many of my friends and I decided to do. Our parents put their feet down and demanded we go to college so that we weren’t ’starving artists’ our whole adult lives, but we got them back by majoring in Art (which everyone knows is useless). Oh, did we get them back. We graduated not only back at ground zero with our art, but with huge student loans to show for it. There should have been a group for this.
What type of group would you make?

AAhh!! My roommate and I always hang in the living room while we watch tv and mess around on our laptops… we are definitely part of that epidemic.
majoring in art is useless? that’s a bold statement. i guess you don’t realize that art dealers are some of the wealthiest businesspeople in the world. i suggest you retract that statement and do some further research.
Wow, a little harsh on the art major, aren’t we?
I can’t sit in front of the TV without my laptop. It is so pathetic!
Someone must have gotten a lover stolen by an art major or something …
what do you do in art major?
lol at Art major group. I know a couple people who tried to do that their freshman and sophmore years then decided on a major that they liked. As for myself, I’m an art major, but that’s not my career choice, not really. I want to work in architecture, but my university doesn’t offer it, and the next school that does costs about 6 times more just for tuition. So yeah, kinda picked the next closest one.
While I don’t think that majoring in art (or music, really) is useless, per se, it is extremely difficult to live off of such a degree unless you are exceptionally talented. Therefore, some people look upon majoring in art as “impractical”, to put it lightly.
I could head the ‘I’m not really going to quit drinking’ group. I know I drink wayyy too much, and when people say something to me, I’ll tell them that I will stop…eventually. hey, you’re only young once.
What’s wrong with being friends with people who don’t drink? We’re not stuck up and judgemental and we can have fun too.
I don’t judge people for drinking. So don’t judge people who don’t.
