[Update: The following is a blow by blow account of the democratic primaries in Indiana and North Carolina. Our coverage began at 6:30pm and ended just after 1am]
It’s yet another political primary extravaganza. The CNN coverage was cool for super Tuesday, but that was back in February! It’s now May and those poor news anchors really have nothing new to say. It’s sadly pathetic and extremely annoying.
That’s why tonight CollegeCandy is bringing you our own version of continuous coverage! Stay tuned for the latest in exit poll data, political meltdowns and candidate bickering without the over-dramatization , stupid jokes, and filler conversation.
It’s Election Night Coverage with Kandy Korrespondent!
1:12am
CNN is now willing to project Hillary Clinton as the winner in Indiana.
98% of the precincts in Lake County, Indiana have now been reported. With 99% of the precincts statewide now in, Senator Clinton now has 637,389 votes and Senator Obama has 615,370.The margin remains at 49% and 51% respectively.
On that note, this is Kandy Korrespondent signing off. Goodnight.
12:37
With 56% of the vote now in from Lake County, Indiana, Obama now has 589,888 votes and Clinton has 606,497. the margin is less than 2%.
12:30am
With 92% of the precincts reporting in Indiana, Clinton leads with 588,823 votes with Obama narrowing the margin to only 2% with 568,156 votes. There are still only 28% of the votes in from critical Lake County, Indiana.
11:46pm
Clinton now only has 584,113 votes to Obama’s 560,323 votes. 51% to 49%
The spike occurred when 28% of the precincts of Gary Indiana in Lake County reported giving an additional 9,470 to Clinton and a whopping 27,991 to Obama.
11:02pm
Indiana still too close to call. Lake County still has not reported their results. In a phone interview with the Washington post, the Mayor of Gary, Indiana, the largest city within Lake County, said,
“Let me tell you, when all the votes are counted, when Gary comes in, I think you’re looking at something for the word to see [..] I don’t know what the numbers are yet, but Gary has absolutely produced in large numbers for Obama here.”
According to CNN, the votes may begin to trickle in within the next hour. Clinton still leads by a 4% margin with 560,720 votes to Obama’s 521,415.
10:11pm
According to CNN, Clinton still narrowly leads in Indiana with 52% (539,988 votes), over Obama’s 48% (499,793 votes). 84% of the precincts are now in.
Networks are not willing to officially call the race for Hillary because the second largest county in Indiana, Lake County, has yet to report its results.
Pundits feel that Lake County may be very strategic for Obama. It has a very large African American community, it is the closest Indiana county to Obama’s home “turf” of Chicago, and it has 8% of the state’s population.
Most likely for this reason, Lake County officials have said that they will not release any results until they count all of their absentee ballots. They said that it may be as late as midnight before the some 11,000 ballots are counted.
According to CNN, mathematically, Obama could steal the state from Clinton if he gets 57% of the vote in this county.
9:26pm
There is now only a 4% gap between the two candidates in the Indiana primary. Clinton 52%; Obama 48%; 72% of the votes have been counted.
9:14
Obama congratulates Clinton on “what appears to be her victory” in Indiana despite the continued reluctance of TV Networks to call it.
9:11
With the exception of CBS, Indiana is seen as too close to call. Precincts predicted to go for Clinton have already fully reported but several major Obama strongholds have yet to send in their tallies. Gary Indiana, an area very close to Chicago with a large African American community, is one such location. We are waiting on the remaining 32% of the precincts. I will keep you posted :-p
8:59
The gap is closing, with 67% of the votes now in– Clinton leads with only 53% to Obama’s 47%.
8:51
Clinton leads Obama 54% to 46% with 51% of the vote. While CBS has projected a Clinton win, CNN is holding out since the votes from several Obama strongholds have yet to be reported.
A possible problem with the Indiana primary– the new Indiana ID law went into effect today and many people were denied the right to vote for bringing the wrong type of ID.
8:44
Made the mistake of tuning into CNN:
Democratic Pundit: blahblahblah Obama blah blah blah Clinton blahblah blah unifying the country… blah
Republican Pundit: blahblah terrorism blah blah blah reverend Wright blah blah 9/11 blahblah McCain rules!
Blitzer: Coming up next: Why a 98 year-old nun wasn’t allowed to vote!
What they didn’t cover? Who won Indiana!
8:39
CNN still says it’s too close to call in Indiana. Clinton 54% to Obamas 46%
8:31pm
Perhaps I spoke too soon, CBS is now calling the race in Indiana for Clinton.
8:25pm
The race is heating up in Indiana– at 55% to 45% Obama now trails Clinton by only 10% with 47% of the precincts reporting.
Deafening silence at Obama’s election night Headquarters– According to a Washington Post blogger, the North Carolina results came earlier than logistically expected. Supporters were told to arrive at 8:30pm and Obama himself wasn’t scheduled to speak until 9pm
8:12pm
Revealing Numbers: According to early exit polls, Obama secured 91% of North Carolina’s black primary voters and 92% of Indiana’s.
In Indiana 63% of Democratic voters felt that Clinton’s attacks against Obama were unfair, similarly, in North Carolina, 66% of voters felt that her attacks were unfair.
8:00pm
Obama wins North Carolina 66% to Clinton’s 32% with 1% of precincts reporting.
In Indiana, Clinton leads Obama 57% to 43% with 32% of precincts reporting.
7:15pm
Clinton leads Obama 59% to 41% with 6% precincts reporting.
7:00pm
According to exit polls, half of Clinton’s supporters say they won’t support Obama should he get the democratic nomination. I find this rather difficult to believe. What do you think? Would a Clinton supporter really choose McCain over Obama? Or is this simply saber-rattling on the part of Hillaryites? (or is it racism?)
6:35pm
Polling places in the Eastern Standard Time portions of Indiana closed at 6pm EST. The remainder of Central Standard Time locations will close at 7pm EST (6pm CST) So far, in Indiana, with 1% of precincts reporting, Clinton leads 64% to Obama’s 36 %.
Earlier today, North Carolinian Superdelegate, Jeanette Cumberland announced that she will throw her support behind Sen. Obama at the Democratic Convention.
North Carolina polls will close at 7:30pm EST.
