It’s back!
After trying a few months of looking at the positives in life, I decided to put a halt to my weekly rant “Is That Really Necessary”. There is already so much negativity out there that I figured I didn’t need to bring anymore attention to it all. But I couldn’t help but get irked over this… and I am sure many of you are feeling the same.
Is it just me or should it be December 25th right now? Don’t get me wrong. I love Christmas. I don’t even celebrate the holiday but I find myself more excited over Christmas specials, Christmas decorations, Christmas drinks at Starbucks, and sitting on Santa’s lap (creepy?) than my Christmas celebrating counterparts.
But people, (and by people, I mainly mean people of the radio and retail worlds) Christmas music already?! What is that about? How many weeks of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” can one person endure? Stores have been carrying Christmas goods and decorating their window shops with candy canes and reindeers. Shopping bags and coffee cups have made the ‘holiday switch’. The cute little gingerbread men are being slaughtered- families torn apart in larger numbers because they are already on bakery shelves! I know its ‘tis the season to be jolly’… except one major factor: TIS NOT THE SEASON YET!
We haven’t even had Thanksgiving. In fact, Thanksgiving is still two whole weeks away. Let me enjoy my stuffing and pumpkin pie, (and biggest bar night of the year) before you go all caroling and Christmas tree on me.
Radio station after radio station are playing Xmas songs. (this radio station happily claims to be “Detroit’s Official Christmas Station” Yipee) that I can’t get out of my head… and might I add by far the worst would be: Feliz Navidad/I want to wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart”—you all know what I’m talking about.
So let me just say- enough with the Christmas music. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas you can ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Santa Clause is Coming to Town’ all you want on me… but two months before Christmas? Is that really necessary?!

THANK YOU!! I completely agree. Seriously, the Christmas music needs to fucking stop until after Thanksgiving. At the rate things are going, it’ll start before Halloween and then! It’ll be year round. And at that point I’ll just kill someone.
its not even in the BALLPARK of December…go to Target - Christmas Trees???? REALLY?!?!? WTF
Why not just whip out the Eater bunny!
i work at starbucks and did christmas setup. i almost threw up while doing it knowing that we had SO MUCH LONGER until december even comes. i walked into walgreens the day after halloween, CHRISTMAS WAS ALREADY THERE. WHY????!!!???
Umm no, I walked into Walgreen a couple days before Halloween, and Christmas was already there. My father and I were JUST talking about this seriously not 5 minutes ago. (although his take on the situation is to just have Christmas now and get it over with)I’ve always had a problem with the super early Christmas, I end up planning too far in advance and then, NOTHING gets done. But I do remember listening to Christmas carols on the yearly road trip to my Aunts for Thanksgiving, and singing The Christmas Song (”Chestnuts roasting on an open fire”) While helping my aunts make the chestnut stuffing every year. But I guess since there are no Thanksgiving songs (why is that? Oh yeah, cause the puritans SUCKED!) then we have to sing Christmas songs or thanksgiving too. But Christmas in late October/ early November, is just plain ridiculous.
I am so happy you wrote this. I’ve been complaining about the Christmas music in the mall for days now. I mean, hell, it’s NOVEMBER. For some reason none of my friends can understand how I don’t want to hear Christmas music until December. They are all like, “Don’t you like Christmas?!”
sigh.
It’s all about the marketing. Money, money, money.
I mean, to be fair, Christmas spirit sells. That’s probably why all those stores are doing it so early. But wtf Starbucks, I mean seriously… are you really going to sell that much coffee by playing cheesy music and debuting the Peppermint Mocha seasonal drink in a red cup.
I def. agree I don’t want to hear anything about Christmas Spirit until I am done gorging myself on turkey and stuffing.
RED CUP IS HEAVEN! I may not like almost two months of Christmas, but one of my favorite things EVER is Red Cup time at SBUX.
YO, thank you for this article. My idiot freinds listened to carols and put up decorations on Halloween day (all the more reason for me to drink that night). I think people that start xmas around thanksgiving are too early. wait till Mid december, cuz otherwise you’ll be all xmas-ed out by the time it comes. seacrest out!
Well, personally, I love Christmas and I’ve had my Christmas tree up since November 1st. I think I casually began putting a few Christmas songs on my shuffle list in August. I just love Christmas.
The more the merrier.
I know exactly what you mean. I work at a retail store at a mall and I went to work the day after Halloween and they were already playing Christmas music. By the night Christmas rolls around, my Christmas spirit is going to be next to nothing.
