CC Staff Rant: Et Tu, Birth Control?

So the other day I came across this article and as my eyes traveled down the page I could feel my blood boiling. Not only does birth control add a few extra pounds (to some of us girls) and possibly cause random health problems, now people are saying that it effects the way those of us taking it “smell” potential mates. Like, BC might actually make it harder to find the right guy.

As someone who’s been taking it for 7 years, I obviously flipped out upon reading, because what the hell I’m just trying to stop my monster cramps and not have a baby!??!!

Don’t panic yet, guys, I’ve been on the Pill ever since I ate an entire half-gallon of ice cream, punched my brother and cussed at my mom in the same day. And my guy’s quite the hottie.

Isn’t the point of that study that the Pill keeps us from smelling guys that are genetically *different* from us? Like, guys that would be great baby-daddies? Maybe that’s why my brother stinks worse than any other guy I know… and still has a string of girlfriends.

Wow, this site is like a very cheap imitation of Jezebel.

  3. Heather says :

lol i bet it was a pro-life sponsored study. classic.

all i know is i need the pill not only for protection against pregnancy, but so my period doesnt kill me and i can lead a normal life. if i cant smell men the right way, thats just whats going to have to happen.

    Anastasia,

We’re not cheap — we’re marked down designer.

  5. Sarah says :

    Anastasia,

Jezebel is totally cheaper than College Candy.

  6. Lauren, University of Michigan says :

Jezebel and CC are two very different sites. And, regardless, that is not the point. The point is that birth control makes us smell weird men. WTF?

  7. Casey says :

There is a big difference between pro-life and pro-moral. The bush administration is pro-moral, anti-debauchery. Pro-LIFERS are for birth control! I’m pro-life and I’m on birthcontrol because I don’t want to get pregnant. I’m all for people being on birthcontrol so they don’t get pregnant and choose to abort the baby. It’s preventative, before murder becomes an option. So don’t lump all pro-lifers into a category of ignorance.

These articles are totes my favourites. You guys make me laugh.

  9. laura says :

Some pro-lifers are against birth control because it is killing a potential baby. Whatevs.

I’ve been on birth control no break for about two years, and I’m smelling fabulous men. (I haven’t gained any weight though, so maybe I’m immune to the side effects)

  10. Casey says :

That’s what I don’t understand, It’s not killing anything because if the egg isn’t fertilized then it isn’t alive, it’s just a bunch of cells. It’s not doing any more harm then being abstinent and loosing an egg during your menstrual cycle every month.

But yeah I’ve been on the pill for 6 years straight now and I’ve smelled some great guys (and some not so great) I think smelling the wrong guys is just a matter that we can hookup without worrying about a pregnancy so we’re not as picky about who we hookup with, not really a side effect of the pill.

  11. sara says :

Casey, birth control pills aren’t a preventive measure- the pill has a secondary effect that makes the lining of your uterus toxic so that if an egg IS accidently ovulated and fertilized, it cannot survive in the uterus, and thus dies. If not for being on the birth control, the egg would be fertilized and alive, therefore birth control is a FORM of abortion (or can be) and not a way of preventing the necessity to have an abortion.

  12. Casey says :

sara, would you mind telling me where you got that information? and maybe posting some sort of proof. I have never heard, nor can I find anything about that secondary effect. The only secondary effect that I know of is that it makes the vaginal mucus thicker so it’s harder for sperm to get through. I’d think doctors would explain all of the ways the pill prevents pregnancy not just two of them and then leave out the third.

And whether or not that is true they are still a preventative measure since their used to prevent fertilization.

Thats where I’m citing from, its a top hit on Google when you type in ‘dangers of birth control’. I guess I’m not 100% sure how reliable a source that is, but it makes sense because if you look at how the pill works (ex. http://womenshealth.about.com/od/thepill/f/howpillworks.htm) it says the wall of the uterus will not let a *fertilized egg* implant itself for growth. Meaning the egg has been fertilized, and thus considered alive?

To be honest the whole thing confuses me quite a bit, because it all depends how you define “alive”, and issues like that. I didn’t mean to offend AT ALL just saying… many people don’t realize that eggs can still be fertilized and ‘killed’ while on the pill

Its talking about vesper glands I believe. It’s not a smell thing at all really. Its how animals in the wild pick up hormones let out by prospective suitors. Humans do the same thing on a smaller scale. What they are attempting to say is that it’s inhibiting our vesper glands from doing there jobs correctly, so you pick up guys who are a lower standard than normal for you. I could be wrong on this, but you should check it out.

  15. Elizabeth says :

I know this is true, but I really don’t care.

    Why it’s true for me:
    1) I looooove the smell of my boyfriend, so I know I’ve got that going on.
    2)I’m on birth control
    3) I have psoriatic arthritis, which is genetic and caused by an overactive immune system.
    4) My boyfriend has psoriasis and arthritis too.

We’re both 22, and most people don’t have this. I actually would have had a second thought about having sex with him if I had known about his immune system originally.

The reason I don’t care is that genetic factors aren’t necessarily expressed. You could live your whole life with a gene for psoriasis and PA which is never expressed. Also, medicine is changing very quickly in case we have a child with our problem.

Most importantly, who cares about how good someone’s immune system is?? He and I are wonderful together (it’s been 7 1/2 mos), and maybe being similar people genetically makes us closer. Raising a child in a home where the parents are happy parents is pretty important, too!

This is not very important to use as a guide because humans are more than just interested in survival- we’re social. We have evolved socially into having families and husbands and not just men impregnating women and leaving.

  16. js says :

    Either:
    1) Practice abstinence because your not on birth control but be attracted to the right men (just you can’t actually sleep with them)
    Or:
    2) Be able to sleep with men because you are protected from pregnancy and yet no be attracted to the right men.

So those are the choices I guess. Or get a ParaGuard IUD or a hysterectomy I guess. Condoms don’t have a high enough effective rate and even less so for natural contraception. Not if you want to be child free for life.

  17. js says :

There is also the abortion as contraception option if you don’t have moral qualms.
