He Said/She Said: Would Guys Take Birth Control?

birth05.jpgI don’t know about you, but if I never had to take the birth control pill again I would be one happy lady. Remembering to take it every morning, paying for it every month, and all the damn cramps are making me angry.

But what choice do we have, really? Condoms aren’t perfect, abstinence isn’t gonna happen, and I can barely take care of myself, let alone bring a child into my world.

Oh, and guys are always expecting it now! Seriously; I once told my ex that I wasn’t taking the pill and he looked at me like I had just told him I pooped in his shoe. How is that fair?

If only there were a birth control pill for guys. Wouldn’t that be amazing? Let them deal with all the crap we’ve been taking care of for years. Do you think guys would take it? Do you even think they know how good they have it?

Angry (it’s not my fault; my hormones go nuts on this damn pill!) I asked a boy those very questions. His answers surprised me (and made me cry…again, the hormones).

I know! When I told my boyfriend that I wasn’t taking birth control (for various reasons), he like practically demanded that I set up an appointment to go get it! But even if I was on it, he would still wear a condom! What is up with that?

You know, I kinda like the Pill. It cleared up my skin, made sex with my steady fuck-buddy (while we were screwing) more enjoyable, and every once in a while, when I was having a really, really, REALLY bad day, I’d look at my pack and realize that it was just PMS.
Just as a note: that same guy advised me to never tell a casual hook up that I was on the pill, because then they’d put up a fuss using a condom. Has anyone ever had that experience?

  3. Stephanie says :

Yeah, guys seem to think that the you being on the pill means that they get to skip the condom..

    Uhhhh.. not so much lol.

  4. Eliza says :

Dude, I took birth control to help me with my flow (TMI, much?), but it gave me migraines. It was a lose/lose situation.

I’m all for birth control and birth control for men…hell yes! but would they remember to take it? Would we trust them to?

  6. Heather says :

i wouldnt trust men to take it, but if i was taking it as well and thought my boyfriend who ive been with like almost 4 years was taking it, id consider it like doubling up. depends on the dude, but dont trust some futuristic one night stand that would be taking it.

eliza, you are like me. not too much information, i hear you. i had the flow problem. but mine was so bad i was passing out all over the place, and was hardly able to go to school. i was on one brand that gave me no headaches, but took away my sex drive. note the take away. not diminish. gone.

then, i switched brands. i got migraines but the sex was all good. i ended up staying on it and dealing with the migraines becasue my period really was that bad. i also had a scary thing happen, where when i had my period, i contracted a bad virus and ended up hospitalized, and nearly went into congestive heart failure… so i was kind of thinking my period damn near almost killed me! (a stomach virus alone may have just made me sick, but the bad period really pushed that illness to something more serious). so i guess it depends on whether or not you would be better off with it or without it, looking at the whole picture. as long as the migraines dont kill me someday, i think ill be alright, and even if they do, i feel like im living better than i would be otherwise.

and im totally rambling because im procrastinating everything and tired.

That’s a really good point, Amber. I am a control freak, so I guess it is better when I have to take it so I absolutely KNOW it was taken care of.

  8. AJ says :

My last boyfriend refused to commit to me until I was on the pill. It was a little ridiculous but got me to the dr. Seems like guys would be totally pro male birth control, and I think it’s a great idea. But I imagine that their BC commercials would be a lot different from the girls, and that’s just what we need is another viagra/axe type commercial to watch.

  9. Rebecca says :

They are actually in the process of developing one, didn’t you know? They’re aiming for a release date of about five years, I think it was. I’ll try and find a source, but they are definitely coming up with one!

  10. Ericka says :

My boyfriend would LOVE to be able to take birth control! He hates that he feels like he isn’t doing anything to help us, and that it all falls on me.

  11. Jenny-WMU says :

According to the latest news (TIME, 8/3/2008), it’s going to be a long wait before male birth control methods hit the market. This is because Big Pharma doesn’t think they’ll make money putting out contraceptives for men, despite the data supporting the fact that men would be open to male birth control and taking charge of if and when they want to have a child, same as women do.

  12. Defender says :

As a guy, I would definitely support the pill for men. Even a shot or something. Hell, I’ve considered a vasectomy but that wouldn’t be fair to whomever I decided to marry if that were to ever happen.

Seriously, guys have no option other than “Shrink-Wrapping” themselves which totally kills the moment. We hate them for reasons and you hate your pill for a reasond. I just wish guys had more than an all-or-nothing approach to birth control.
