Plan B Sales Expected to Soar…Duh!

When the announcement came last year that Plan B would be sold over the counter, slutty college girls, or just college girls in general, silently rejoiced. This means no more shameful experiences at the local college health clinic having to explain to a nurse who looks like your mom why you need this pill, as well as the exact details of what happened. That situation is traumatizing enough that I’m sure it deterred many girls who really needed the pill, but were not willing to go through the humiliation of actually obtaining it.

Lucky for the incoming freshman class of 2011, who will never truly appreciate the easy accessibility of Plan B pills at the drugstore pharmacy instead of a doctor’s office. Well, pharmaceutical companies are just as excited as we are, with the sales expected to be ENORMOUS for 2007.

According to the NY Post, “The company projects that sales of Plan B will total about $80 million for 2007, almost double the total for 2006 and up eightfold from 2004, when Barr acquired the product as a prescription-only drug.”

Another quote I found interesting was from the pharmaceutical company person. “Overall, we’ve been very pleased with the acceptance,” said Barr spokeswoman Carol Cox. Well, obviously they are happy with the acceptance of it. Those things are flying off the shelves like candy.

My question is, how much of the sales are from college age girls, age 18-24? I would venture to say that a good majority of them are in our age group. Someone should do a study about that and track the statistics.

I think the pharmaceutical companies have a lot to thank us for. Without the typical college experience, Plan B would be just another OTC medicine that no one payed much attention to.

Can I just say that as great as this probably is for girls, wouldn’t everyone be better off if girls collectively just bit the bullet and made your guys use some condoms. Does the average college girl know anything about the sexual histories of the men she sleeps with? I know that “no one likes condoms and they make sex so much worse, and blah blah blah,” but if you would just use them, there’d be no reason to deal with the weird nurse ladies about the pill and, outside of the .1% of the time that condoms are ineffective, there’d be no reason for this Plan B pill either.

Yeah because you know, when guys and gals are completely drunk and are getting hot and heavy, they think, ‘I must protect my future by putting on a condom!’

    Let’s be realistic, no ideal.

Plan B is a life saver, honestly. I rarely have sex, so I really do not want to take any birth control because it alters my moods. The last time I did get it on, we had a nice surprise afterward. The condom broke. So Thank goodness for Plan B being over the counter. If I had to wait from a Friday night, until Monday morning to see a Doctor I would have pulled my hair out. I think it is a great idea to have it OTC, hopefully this will help with unwanted pregnancies, Children, and or Abortions.
