Just Rolled Out of Bed? You Don’t Have to Look That Way

britneygross1.jpgWake up at 7:45. Throw on sweats, a hoodie, and flip flops. Throw your hair in a messy bun. Check Facebook. Grab your bag and get to class by 8 AM.

Does this at all resemble your morning routine? I know how tempting it is to get that last fifteen minutes of sleep and run out the door looking like you just rolled out of bed. Fashion is probably the last thing on your mind when you’re trying to remember things like, Where on earth is my physics book? And, Why can I only find one shoe??? However, it is important to put at least some effort into the way you look before class.

The way you dress affects the way people perceive and treat you, whether you care or not. It can also affect your attitude and level of performance in class. If you are wearing pajamas, you aren’t going to feel awake enough to fully participate in a class discussion. If you look like you don’t care, people are going to think that you don’t care (including your professors).

Obviously you aren’t going to head to class decked out from head to toe in your Sunday best (unless you never made it home, you dawg), but there are easy ways to update your outfits so you look a little less messy and … sleepy.

10 Easy Style Updates For Class This Fall

1421_4070_573.jpg1. A scarf - throw on jeans and a plain colored fitted t-shirt. Add a scarf and voila! Instant fashion. Scarves are really in this year and there are tons of cute ones out there to pick from. You can’t get an easier shortcut to style. Find them at American Eagle, H&M, or Limited Too (yea, it’s for little kids but they have a lot of cute scarves that are only $10!).

923853_fpxtif.jpeg2. Leggings - they’re just as comfortable and flexible as sweatpants, but they look way cuter. Put on a long, soft sweater and you’re all set to go. This is probably one of the most comfortable outfits for sitting in a long class (as long as the heat’s not on extra high!). If you’re feeling extra fashionable, complete the ensemble with a pair of black leather boots.

chunky-jewelry_01.jpg3. Big, chunky jewelry - get a bunch of colorful necklaces (with varied lengths) and bracelets. Layer a few pieces to add pizazz to a plain black or white shirt.

suede_flats_steve_madden.jpg4. Flats - buy a couple comfortable pairs. They look so much better than UGGs, flip flops, or sneakers but they’re not hard to walk in, like heels.

1340_6774_029.jpg5. Cardigans - are really in for fall. Put one on over the camisole you wore to bed and no one will ever know! Wear with jeans or leggings.

headband.jpg6. Headbands! - One of my favorite things EVER. If you’re hair isn’t freshly styled, a headband can cover up oily roots and make wearing your hair down easier (by keeping it out of your face). I have headbands in several different colors - some have bows, some have rhinestones, one even has a little buckle on it like it’s a belt (my favorite). Headbands really are a lifesaver on bad hair days.

mackage-coat.jpg7. Statement Winter Coat - Yeah, it’s definitely not worth it to dress up for class sometimes so you put on a whatever outfit. However, people are still going to see this outfit when you’re not in class. My school is in the middle of the city so when I’m walking to class I see tons of people who don’t even go to my school. Putting on a nice winter coat will give the illusion that I am dressed nicely since these strangers will never see what’s underneath.

6018.jpg8. Mascara - A quick way to look like you’re eyes aren’t about to droop shut and to give your face a much needed early-morning lift.

v271157_rch50.jpg9. Layers - This ones kind of obvious - put on more than one shirt. Just make sure they coordinate with each other in some way.

0423_3646_001.jpg10. Belt it - A quick way to make your outfit look straight out of a fashion shoot is to add a belt. For example, add a belt over the long sweater and leggings look, or over a basic cardigan.

in college i was a hot mess after freshman year. i didn’t care bc i went thru a terrible break up midway into my college ‘experience’ so my last two years left me looking like roadkill. i def agree that you should put in some effort to dressing…not just bc of what others think but bc of how you’ll feel about yourself- just like mr.jay says- don’t always dress for how you FEEL dress for how you WANT to feel. it’s really good advice!

These are great tips. A couple more accessories I might add would be lip gloss and earings.
Also, don’t try all these choices at once or you’ll end up looking a hot mess.
