Are We Sharing Too Much?

The summer of 2008. A summer drowning
in recession, debt, ridiculous gas prices, and
boring, trashy television (I mean,
Greatest American Dog??). Lots of things
seem to be going wrong…or at least…discussed
to the point of having us all believe they’re going wrong…and many teens and twenty-somethings
are turning to the web to air their grievances.

Because 2008 isn’t just the summer of expensive
corn and Obama-rama, it’s also the summer of TMI.

Quickie: ScarJo + Tom Waits = Strange Decision

scarlett-johansson-coachella-singing.jpg

That’s right. Another actress with no known singing talent is putting out an album, and this time, instead of letting a 50-year-old man write her words and a computer sing for her, she’s going to do covers. 10 covers. From one artist.

Due to be released May 20th, Anywhere I Lay My Head will feature Johansson’s voice and Tom Waits’s music. Yes. Tom Waits. The guy who sounds like he eats rocks for breakfast and occasionally slides metal across trashcans (but who knows how to write a great, complicated lyric).

How many of you out there can picture Scarlett listening to one Tom Waits song, let alone 10?

I can’t. Besides, how can you sing a T.W song if the only hardship you know is being chased into the Chateau Marmont by paparazzi?

Ugh. Whatever. Money might not be able to buy you love, but it can sure buy a CD deal.

R. Kelly Sings, But Never Faces The Music

r kellyR. Kelly.

Judging by his recent foray into rap musical sagas, one can only imagine that the guy either takes himself way, way, way too seriously, or has biggest sense of humor ever.

But here’s something else Kelly has a lot of: pending child pornography charges.

So, why hasn’t he even stepped foot inside a courthouse?

The obvious answer is that our justice system is screwed up, and lawyers can keep you running from charges that are over 5 years old for as long as your money holds out.

Besides the 21 counts of child pornography filed in June of 2002 (over a sex tape allegedly made in 1997, which prosecutors claim shows Kelly having sex with a girl around 14 years old), there were 12 other counts (filed in 2003, but not included in the main trail) of allged pornography attached to photographs of the singer and another naked under-aged girl.

While most offenders face a maximum of 15 years in prison if convicted of such acts, Kelly has successfully pushed his trail back time and time again; a jury selection scheduled for September 17 the most recent postponement. Read More »

Music Review: “The Con” - Tegan and Sara

tegan and saraI’ve been seriously girl-crushing on Canadian singing duo Tegan and Sara ever since listening to “I Won’t Be Left” on repeat after a bad breakup. Ever since then, these girls have been the soundtrack to my love life, and their fifth album, The Con is the perfect addition.

The Quin twins, who established themselves as key players on the indie scene with their last album, So Jealous, are all grown up on this record.

The musicians blossom musically and lyrically on this record, their best so far in my opinion. The sisters’ distinctive harmonies are better and smoother than ever, letting you sink into their words.

Their lyrics are on-point as always, introspective and poetic in a way that feels like they’ve been reading your diary.

Give a listen to “Back in Your Head,” a relatable, simple song that, fittingly, will be stuck in your head, and “Are You Ten Years Ago,” which boasts a quirky beat with a techno quality that’ll surprise you if you’re a true blue Tegan and Sara fan. Read More »
