New Semester, New Beginnings

Now that the New Year’s Day
hangovers are a thing of the past,
it’s time to trade in the warm sofa
for cold, hard desks as the spring
semester approaches. If you are
wondering how you will possibly
make it through this semester after
barely
making it through the fall semester
you are in luck, because a new semester
brings new beginnings.

Love Em or Hate Em: Light Wash Denim

jeans.jpgI have 12 pairs of jeans. TWELVE. If that isn’t bad enough, only 4 fit me right now, one of the four has a giant hole in the leg, and the rest all look exactly the same anyway. What possessed me to buy 12 pairs of the same jeans, I will never know.

So, I’m in the mood for a new pair, but there are some qualifications:

1. They must fit over my butt
2. They must not look like the rest of my jeans

I have been researching (read: hanging out at Nordstroms) and noticed that there is an old trend resurfacing in denim: light wash. As in the jeans we used to wear back in 1993 when Saved by the Bell was still on and MC Hammer was 2 Legit to Quit.

They fit my rules (shockingly, the rest of my jeans are not acid washed), but I am not sure if this is a style I am ready to embrace. Thoughts?

Love Em or Hate Em: Bright Jeans

purple.jpgred-jeans.jpgblue.jpg

I opened my closet today to grab a pair of jeans and noticed something: all of my jeans look exactly the same. Ok, maybe not exactly - different lengths, different pockets, slightly different legs - but for the most part, my jeans are all the freaking same.

14 pairs of dark blue denim.

I love all 14 pairs differently (some are for class, some are for weekends, some are to make my ass look so good guys can’t resist me), but I think I need somethin’ a little different. A little color, perhaps?

Colored denim is all over the place these days, but is it cute or totally lame? And if it is cute, can real people (not a size zero) really pull it off?

What do you think? Would you rock some bright red pantalones?

Rock The Look: Wide Leg Jeans

picture-9.png

[Do you ever feel like you can’t pull something off? Have trendy pieces in your closet that you would never have the courage to actually wear out? Well take those pieces out, shake off the dust, and continue reading!

In this series, I will choose a different piece that can be difficult to incorporate into an outfit and give you ideas on how to wear it. If there’s anything you would like to read about in the future, please leave a comment!]

Is anyone else getting tired of skinny jeans? I mean they look great on people like Kate Moss and Nicole Richie, but for those of us without personal trainers rocking skinny jeans can make one feel a little self-conscious. If you feel more comfortable with a wider pant (something a little more forgiving of that 3 a.m. Chinese food feast), then I suggest my current favorite style: wide leg jeans. Read More »

5 Things That Should Be in Your Closet!

closet.jpg

With classes starting, like, now (eek!), here are 5 foolproof items that will carry you throughout the year. Versatile, comfortable and reasonably priced, it’s a wonder you don’t already own them!

1. Short-Sleeve Cardigan
The collegiate look is in this year. It’s just a fact. And for those of you who aren’t exactly fond of the whole prep-school-blazer look, here is a much more subtle option. The short-sleeve cardi is super functional, being worn with a tank top or tee during the warm months, or a long-sleeve tee once it gets cold in your neck of the woods. Pick up one in a neutral color and see it become a wardrobe staple. Read More »

Designer Brands: Why Are We So Obsessed?

coach-signature-stripe-pink-handbag1.jpgDuring my freshman year of college I was amazed at how many girls wore designer denim to class and toted their books around in enormous Coach bags every day. How do they afford it? Why would they waste such a cute, expensive outfit on 8 AM class? It wasn’t the parade of sweats and pajamas I had been prepared for by older friends.

Instead I saw Seven For All Mankind, Paige, Primp, BCBG, Free People, Steve Madden, etc. etc. etc: What distinguishes these particular brands from Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, or those created by T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s? After questioning several of my designer brand sporting friends and trying to justify several of my own purchases, I came up with the following list:

    SIX REASONS TO GO DESIGNER

1. Product Quality - Many people who don’t believe in buying designer brands say that you are only paying for the brand name and that the product is no better than any other. While you are paying in part for the “privilege” to wear the brand’s name, you are also probably purchasing a product that is high quality. For example, I buy designer denim because it fits better and lasts longer than the jeans I buy for $25.00 at Bob’s. Designer clothes are usually made from finer fabrics and have superior stitching compared to those of bargain stores.

2. Consistency - Most people who wear designer clothes swear by a few designers. For example, someone might own thirty pairs of Paige jeans but refuse to even look at Joe’s Jeans. Both are expensive, high quality brands, so what’s the difference? Paige jeans consistently fit, last, and look great, where Joe’s Jeans aren’t as flattering (this isn’t my personal opinion, it’s just an example). People keep going back to the same brands because they consistently perform well for them. Read More »

The Blue Jean Tone Up

blue-jean-tone-up1.jpgYou pride yourself on your denim collection. Skinnies, bootcuts, trousers – they’re hanging in your closet ready to hug your lower half. But lately, you’ve been longing to tone up that tush and tighten those thighs so that you can really show off your assets.

Well, we found six awesome moves in a back issue of SELF that will make you a blue-jean babe in just one month. Just perform three sets of 12 reps of each exercise three days a week and on non-consecutive days:

Pigeon Toes

Stand with toes together, heels out, hands on hips. Contract abs as you slowly lift heels, rising onto balls of feet. Hold for two seconds. Lower to start and repeat.

Seated Leg Raise

Sit with right leg extended, foot flexed, and left knee bent, foot flat. Grasp the shin of left leg. Raise right leg a few inches off floor and sweep away from body. Hold for one count. Return leg to center. Switch legs.

Glute Sweeper

Start facedown, supported on forearms and right knee. Extend left leg behind you as high as you can, toes pointed. Contract abs and butt and slowly cross left leg behind left foot, reaching toes toward floor without touching down. Return leg to start and switch. Read More »
