New Semester, New Beginnings

Now that the New Year’s Day
hangovers are a thing of the past,
it’s time to trade in the warm sofa
for cold, hard desks as the spring
semester approaches. If you are
wondering how you will possibly
make it through this semester after
barely
making it through the fall semester
you are in luck, because a new semester
brings new beginnings.

Project Runway Rundown: The Table Cloth Fiasco

austin.jpgWelcome back, Tim Gunn! Oh, and the rest of you Project Runway people. I can’t tell you how excited I am to have my favorite show back. I even went out to Happy Hour and had a few beers (and a giant plate of fries) to celebrate!

I missed the actual premiere, but caught it on my DVR, which is better anyway…no commercials! Anyways, like every year, the first episode kicked off with us meeting the new designers. I could write my feelings about all of them, but instead I will let you learn about them here. It is a lot less biased (because I am a judgemental bitch)…and there also happen to be just too many for me to remember.

After unpacking their things in their lovely new apartments (girls in one, a large group of gay men – and one straight guy who wants EVERYONE to know it by talking about his daughters – in the other) the designers head up to the roof for a party with Tim and Heidi. Champagne is opened, people talk and everyone tries to impress Ms. Heidi Klum.

And then they have their first challenge: The Gristedes challenge. Read More »

Summer Vacay Ideas: On the Cheap!

suitcase-couverture.jpgSo we are finally in the dog days of summer (which I realized when I went for a run at noon). Some of us are working, going to school, or schlepping around interning. Others are laying by the pool sipping sangria (*jealous*). But, I think we can all agree that a break of any kind is welcome. Especially when that break is a trip to somewhere cool, offbeat and–the best part– cheap. So pack your favorite flip flops, airy sundress and camera and head somewhere, anywhere but here. Might I suggest any of these destinations:

Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico.
This 21 by 5 mile island is referred to asIsla Nena by residents, loosely translating into “virgin island”. Located only 6 miles off Puerto Rico’s coast, it is a hotbed of natural beauty and tropical activities. You fly onto the island after flying into San Juan, Puerto Rico, so be prepared with a your iPod, a magazine, eye mask or Valium–whatever it takes to get you to board an 8 seater plane to Vieques Airport.

Once you’re on the island, you can stay anywhere ranging from $90 a night B&B’s to luxury hotels, so whether you’re on a typical college budget, or you happen to have a trust fund, there are accomodations for you.

Activities on the island include: hiking, snorkeling and diving, biking, fishing, sightseeing and dining in Bravos de Boston, Vieques’ most fashionable town. However, the highlight of this destination is definitely its Bioluminescent Bay. The bay is filled with phosphorescent microorganisms, that glow in the dark when disturbed. Nighttime charter boats take you on a guided swimming and kayaking trip to the brightest bio bay in the world. If you’re looking for a tropical getaway that won’t break the bank and is off the beaten path, Vieques is it. Read More »

Jennifer Hudson: The Nice Diva

jennifer_hudson.jpgJennifer Hudson’s life is a modern day Cinderella story. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Hudson lived your typical life. That is, until she was cast in her first play in college. That small role got her uber successful career on track and took Jennifer from “girl with awesome voice” to Academy Award winning actress and recording artist. Jennifer Hudson is at the tippy top of her game, but no matter who she has worked with (Um…SJP? Ne-Yo? Beyonce?), she is still a hometown girl at heart.

CollegeCandy got to speak to Jennifer about her fame, her fashion and her future (her debut album drops on September 30th!). It is nothing short of inspiring.

CC: (Internal Dialogue: I can’t believe I am talking to Jennifer Hudson. Ohmygod. Ok, let me start this.)Everyone is always talking about your style; you always look flawless. What are your secrets?
JH: I refuse to leave the house unless I am comfortable in what I’m wearing. If I’m not comfortable, I’m not wearing it.

CC: Yeah. I agree, but my comfort clothes – sweats – won’t get me on any best dressed lists.
JH: I have to love what I’m in. To me, what I wear is an expression. I’m just expressing myself through my clothes. It’s how I feel that day.

CC: Being a movie and music star must keep you quite busy. How are you spending your summer?
JH: One day I’m doing music the next day I’m doing film. I’m preparing for my next film that is coming out, which is The Secret Life of Bees. I’m also starting to prepare for my album that is getting ready to drop, so I’m doing the promotions for that, as well. And when I can, I just hang out at home. Read More »

Proof That MTV is Getting Crappier By The Year

mtv.gif

Looks like MTV should change their name to OCTV (Other Crap TV).

That’s all they seem to be showing these days, anyway. Crap. Crap that has more to do with stupid fame whores than new and exciting tune-age. Has anyone heard actual music on MTV lately (besides the stuff they play during The Hills)?

Yeah, me either.

CC’s Interview with Jennifer Hudson: What Would You Ask?

jhud.jpgOhmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod.

This Friday, CollegeCandy will be interviewing the one and only Jennifer Hudson! As in Dreamgirls, Jennifer Hudson. Sex and the City, Jennifer Hudson. And singing superstar, Jennifer Hudson.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod.

We looooove this woman. We love how sweet and down to earth she seems. How absolutely freaking gorgeous she is. And, of course, her ridiculous talent. We want to be her.

But, since that is never going to happen (considering people in the office run away when we start playing Rock Band), getting the chance to talk to her will probably be the best thing to happen to us. Ever.

I can’t imagine we are the only ones who are this obsessed/in love with J-Hud. How could you not be? So, we are giving you ladies the chance to ask her some questions. Well, not directly - that would be a tad overwhelming for our lady friend, no? - but through us.

Submit your questions in the comments section below by Thursday at noon and we will pass em along to Ms. Hudson. Want to know her beauty secrets (we do)? Ask about em. Want to know all about her new single, Spotlight? Add it to the list.

We will bring ‘em all with us and see what Jennifer has to say. So hop to it ladies; this is an opportunity you do not want to miss!

CollegeCandy’s Weekend Candy Dish

ellen_degeneres.jpg
Did you know the Daytime Emmy’s happened? Yeah, us either. But Ellen Degeneres did.

We can’t stop laughing. Just look.

Not sure which is more disturbing about this story; being contestants on American Gladiator, or being the mother of your own grandchildren.

Apparently, Boys Like Girls like girls. In other news: girls also like boys.

Porn isn’t just for boys, anymore. Even a good girl can learn a few things

This just in: the real world isn’t as fun as college.

Summer TV Totally Worth TiVo-ing

400_swingtown_080414_cbs_amacpherson.jpgThe three month long writer’s strike this winter left us cold, lonely, and without our favorite shows. The strike ended in February, but it took the writers and showrunners a while to get back in the swing of things. We had stunted seasons of shows like The Office to compensate for the time off, and while we support the writer’s, that made us very sad. Thankfully this summer there’s more than enough new shows to hold our procrastinating attention.

These shows are worth your TiVo time this summer:

Swingtown (CBS, Thursdays – 10pm) Think Mad Men with sex and drugs in place of sexual harassment and martinis. This new CBS show takes place in a suburban town in the the mid-1970s, where a new couple befriends their neighbors who like to enjoy themselves with some kinky sex practices, namely partner swapping and foursomes.

The Factory (Spike, Sundays – 10pm) – Spike TV’s first original television series takes a comedic look at four bored small town factory workers. This is a good program for those who like the shipping guys on The Office. The show was written by and stars Mitch Rouse, co-creator of Strangers With Candy. Read More »

LiLo Heads Back to Work

lohan.jpgIt has been so long since we’ve seen Lindsay Lohan in anything other than rehab/a bikini/a mugshot/the arms of her “girlfriend” that I sorta forgot she did anything else.

Yeah, it seems that Ms. Lohan was at one point an actress. Wait…now I remember. Mean Girls. I loved that movie! Oh man. Remember that part at the end when the girls are all sharing secrets and that girl was like, “Most people think I’m lying about being a virgin because I prefer jumbo tampons, but I can’t help it if I have a heavy flow and a wide-set vagina!”

Ha! Classic.

But back to my point. Lindsay has returned to work! She has been spending a lot of time on the set of her new movie, Labor Pains, and the reps for the movie say that everything is going A-Ok. Last time I checked, no one in Hollywood would insure a Lohan movie because she’s so…er….she’s a hot mess. But, the peeps behind Labor Pains decided Lohan was a risk worth taking. According to People:

“We were a little bit reluctant to work with her,” Lati Grobman, one of the producers, tells PEOPLE. “But she’s been amazing. We took the chance. It’s good that we did. So far, so good.” Read More »
