We are busy girls, no doubt. But being busy is never a good excuse for skipping out on a workout. The Body Blog: Elliptical Versus Treadmill

Whether it be a new workout technique or a new way to eat healthy, I’m your guru for all things fitness related-ish. As an avid athlete, I have played various sports, tried new ways to stay fit and have found what works and what sure as hell doesn’t.]

Today, we’re going to discuss the difference between using an elliptical and a treadmill. Now, while I am partial to a treadmill, as I run on mine every day, I spent two years using an elliptical before I made the switch, so I’m a pro on both ends. Here’s the dish:

Elliptical:

Pros: It’s a great full body work out; while placing your feet in the holders and holding on to the handlebars, you’re body is secure, and the lack of actually lifting your feet makes this a good low impact workout for those of you with knee/leg problems. If you hold the handles and use your arms, you work your full body for the entire workout (which should be about 30 minutes at a time), and when you get off you will feel refreshed, invigorated and a bit winded (in a good way).

Cons: While you get a full body workout with the simultaneous arm and leg movements, you won’t feel exhausted when you get off in the sense that you had to push yourself to excel, like you would on other workout equipment. Also, because your feet are stationary, they can get numb over the course of the workout, which causes some discomfort. It is also very difficult to move your arms and legs at the same pace, so one part of your body may be working harder than the other (i.e., you move your arms faster to push your legs, making them do less work). Dancing With the Stars…or The Distorted Body Image?

cheryl.jpgFor seven seasons, Dancing with the Stars has been a crowd-pleasing hit. What’s not to love? Whether you love cheering for your favorite celebrities; watching sexy, sassy, or snarky dance routines every week; engaging in some family-friendly reality fun; or endorsing your competitive side by entering DWTS pools (or voting for your favorite dancer until your votes are maxed out)– Dancing with the Stars really seems to have it all.

What’s more, the show has proven that working out can be fun, and that dancing is an excellent way to shed some unwanted pounds, build muscle, and start living an overall healthier lifestyle. I know I signed up for Zumba and impulsively bought the DWTS Cardio Dance workout DVD without batting an eye.

As DWTS has increased our awareness of fun ways to stay fit, it’s also a great vehicle to demonstrate that fitness comes in all shapes and sizes. In the past, we’ve seen DWTS combat some of the Hollywood stereotypes that distort women’s body images across the country. Remember when all 167 pounds of Laila Ali made it to the top three? How about when Sabrina Bryan, who is “chunky” by Hollywood standards, was sent home simply because everyone thought she was too talented to need their votes?

Most importantly, consider the fact that normally the beauty queens and supermodels are the first to get the boot: Paulina Porizkova, Shandi Finnessey, and Shoana Moakler are among the competitors who never saw round three, and thus, they all blend together into one generic DWTS loser, while fan favorites like Marisa Jaret Winokur show you that being skinny doesn’t mean you can move. Placebo Effect Exercising: It’s Something, Right?

42-17004645.jpgI have this ongoing internal battle with myself, all stemmed from what I deem “placebo effect exercising.” I’m continually battling what little bulge I have, in an effort to ultimately be bulge-less, yet never see the results I fantasize about.

I eat a yogurt for breakfast instead of a yummy prosciutto and egg breakfast sandwich. Ten points. I walk a block. Five points. I do a little dance in my dainty undergarments in (dim) light. Jackpot. I put a bikini on and prance into natural light. I’m in the negative.

My boss brings cupcakes to work and I eat a lovely little concoction called a “Michael Jackson,” (white on the bottom, chocolate on top) so I join the gym after work. I decide to buy some super cute workout clothes to motivate me to go to the gym. I go. Once. I ran a half mile on the treadmill. “That’s OK,” I think to myself, as I walk another 1.5 miles. “Maybe if I run outside, I’ll have more to keep me interested.” Right. I tried that and stopped to pet every animal (including squirrels and pigeons) that crossed paths with me and picked a few flowers. Scratch that idea. “Lingerie dance party….. in heels,” I think. Back to square one.

I notice after a couple weeks that I’ve seen no results. “How can that be?” I think to myself. Calculate one menstrual cycle into the equation and that relieves any dietary discipline I may have demonstrated before. No Matter Your Size, It Is Time to Get Fit

gym.jpgLast December, The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that over the last twelve years, death rates among 2,600 adults 60 and older were slightly lower in overweight individuals than in normal weight adults.

Wait, what? Isn’t obesity a major health concern?

Actually, the New York Times reports that “despite concerns about an obesity epidemic, there is growing evidence that our obsession about weight as a primary measure of health may be misguided.”

It seems that medical research is taking a different path down the road of health, obesity, and weight loss studies. In fact, the Archives of Internal Medicine, as referenced in the Times suggests that half of overweight people and one third of obese people are actually “metabolically healthy.”

America’s obsession with beauty and looks has long stereotyped overweight people in a negative light. However, studies such as those mentioned above are proving that in many cases, thin or underweight people are in poorer health than those with a few excess pounds. The Journal of the American Medical Association conducted fitness tests and observed mortality rates of their subjects, and discovered that “fitness level, regardless of body mass index, was the strongest predictor of mortality risk.” Therefore, skinny people blessed with a fast metabolism will still find working out to be advantageous to their health, and “big boned” individuals should not be written off as being “lazy” or “sluggish,” as stereotypes suggest. It’s Time to Get Phit…at The Vagina Spa!

I work out 5 days a week. I do the elliptical, I Spin, I take random classes and I even lift weights. It is important for me to stay healthy and fit. Of course, there are the shallow reasons, as well. I really love my black skinny pants. And I want to be at my sexiest when I hit the town in search of a man.

I have learned the importance of varying my workouts – it truly is the best way to hit all muscle groups and get a total body workout. And I thought I was getting every last muscle (at least that’s how it feels the day after a grueling Pilates class when I can barely laugh, let alone move), but according to Dr. Lauri Romanzi, a gynecologist in NYC, I am missing one very important muscle.
