New Semester, New Beginnings

Now that the New Year’s Day
hangovers are a thing of the past,
it’s time to trade in the warm sofa
for cold, hard desks as the spring
semester approaches. If you are
wondering how you will possibly
make it through this semester after
barely
making it through the fall semester
you are in luck, because a new semester
brings new beginnings.

Forever 21 Pick of the Week: Belted Ruffle Front Dress, $46

pickoftheday.jpgWe’ve teamed up with our friends at FashionPulseDaily to bring you the best of Forever 21. Every Wednesday, we’ll highlight a fabulous Forever 21 item that stands out above the rest in that over-crowded, color coordinated store. For more fashion fun, check out FashionPulseDaily.

We’re constantly on a search for “dressy dresses” that don’t cost us our entire month’s pay, but still look uber-expensive. We most definitely discovered this important component in the Belted Ruffle Front Dress for only $46.

Although this is a tad bit more than we’d want to pay at our beloved Forever 21, the yellowish/green hue of the dress is amazing, its actually silk, the ruffles are well-crafted, and the belt gives it just the right amount of sass.

We’d definitely wear this to a formal occasion or to the upcoming New York Fashion Week in February, and if someone compliments us on it, all we have to say is “Thank You.”

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Katie Holmes Mom Haircut leads her to Mom Website, Leads her to Fabulous Find.

katie_holmes1.jpg[Every week our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you don’t have to.

All you have to do is click on the goods and - boom - you can buy the entire ensemble. Yes, we know; there is a spot for her in heaven.]

Lately, Katie holmes style has been reminding me of a mixture between my brothers and my mom…circa 1992. Baggie Jeans, a mom haircut - I’m sort of on the fence about it all. And by on the fence, I obviously mean never buying into the trend. Ever.

But, every now and again, I find myself loving a piece of hers, writing it off as “in my dreams,” or “when I win the lottery.” Between her paychecks from Dawson’s Creek syndication and her husband being - um - Tom Cruise, the girl has a budget of Loubitons and lavish meals, whereas I am stuck with Target finds and Ramen Noodles.

That is, until People.com revealed this jacket is only $75.00. Yes, you read that right. SEVENTY FIVE! This little slice of info made my weekly Celebrity Chic on the Cheap more like Celebrity’s Cheap and Chic finds, giving yours truly some extra time to sleep in this Thanksgiving Weekend.

So I bring you this weeks’ Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Katie Holmes’ Mom Haircut leads her to Mom Website, Leads her to Fabulous Find. Read More »

Rock The Look: Belts (Thick or Thin!)

runwaybelts.jpg
(Left to right, Fall 2008 RTW, from style.com: Jill Stuart, Fendi, Fendi, 3.1 Philip Lim)

[Do you ever feel like you can’t pull something off? Have trendy pieces in your closet that you would never have the courage to actually wear out? Well take those pieces out, shake off the dust, and continue reading! In this series, I will choose a different piece that can be difficult to incorporate into an outfit and give you ideas on how to wear it. If there’s anything you would like to read about in the future, please leave a comment!]

Belts are your most useful accessories; they can hold up your pants, make your waist look small (even in the bulkiest of sweaters), and (literally) pull your outfit together.

Belts are a worthwhile investment because they are so versatile. Neutral colors like brown or black will work with most items in your wardrobe, and brighter colors can make a boring outfit unique. Read on for different ways to cinch your waist this winter. (Warning: anything that applies pressure to the stomach is probably not something you’re going to want to try out at Thanksgiving dinner.)

Night Styler: Thanksgiving Weekend Edition

12280.jpg[In early adulthood there is an activity that plays a large role in most of our lives; nights out on the town. And with those nights out always comes the question: “What am I gonna wear?!?”

Each week I’ll be putting together a cute and affordable “going out” ensemble guide (that you can tweak to your own personal style and body type, of course) so that maybe that age-old question can be answered a little quicker than usual. And your friends aren’t waiting - for hours - for you to emerge from your room. Just consider me your own (free) personal Rachel Zoe.]

So this week marks the official beginning of the holiday season and Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays of the year; how can you not enjoy massive amounts of delicious goodness, family time, and a four day weekend? It also means it’s time to head on home and see your family and friends who you left behind when the school year began.

It’s more than likely on Friday or Saturday you’ll hit up a party or two and run into familiar faces that you haven’t seen in ages, so looking damn fine is definitely up there on the list of priorities. You wanna prove to your friends, enemies, and possibly your ex, that college is doing you well and you’re more fabulous than ever. Here’s a guide to a vintage-inspired outfit that’ll accentuate your curves and ever-growing hotness, and leave everyone talking. (And, no, it is not a Pilgrim ensemble…though that would be vintage…) Read More »

Rock The Look: Faux Fur

It’s really starting to get cold out there now, but you can stay warm by adding a few furry touches to your wardrobe. Models on the fall runways sported real fur, but faux fur is a more wallet- and animal - friendly option. While it may be a little unrealistic and over the top for a college girl to sport a big fur coat, here are some ways you can subtly slip this trend into your wardrobe: Read More »

Moving Beyond Uggs: Style Tips for a Warm and Sexy Winter

winter.jpgAh, late fall. Midterms have passed, Halloween decorations festoon every front porch and retail store, piles of red and orange and yellow leaves line the streets, and there’s a lovely crispness to the air, which, before we know it, will turn to terrifying sub-zero wind chill factors and white-out blizzard conditions.

Woot. Woot.

But just because it’s time to put your miniskirt away doesn’t mean you have to start dressing yourself like Estelle Getty (god rest her sassy little Golden Girls soul). There are plenty of ways to bundle yourself against all forms of winter weather while still looking like a hottie.

Layering!

Lucky for all of us who live in the northern reaches of the U.S., layering continues to be all the rage in fashion. Stay warm while rushing between buildings to your next class by wearing multiple light weight pieces on top of each other. Por exemple, a tank top under a long sleeve tee under a cardigan will keep you cozy without making you look like the Michelin Man. Throw on a scarf (another fashion must these days) for even more insulation. On real nippy days, put on some long johns – believe me, those puppies work wonders and fit nicely under most clothing.

Get Russian About It
So I don’t know if you guys know, but Russia is pretty chilly; hence, those f**kers know how to bundle. For serious drops in temperature, think Soviet style: giant fur hats (fake, if you’re broke or a hater), full-length high-collared wool coats, knee-high riding boots. Not only will you be impervious to the cold, you’ll feel like a sexy spy from the 1950s. What more could you want out of life? Read More »

Cheap, Hot Trends for Fall/ Winter Fashion

target3.jpg

We all look to magazines for our fashion sense and know-how, but what if we can’t afford all those styles in Elle and on the runway? College Candy understands your pain (because we also like to split our budget between cocktails and clothes) and we want to help you get the fabulous looks at a fraction of the price.

This winter jeweled clutches are all the rage. After Sex and the City, Fendi has become way more popular, but who can REALLY afford a small clutch for more than a grand? Here is cheaper version…on the left is the Fendi, on the right is a La Regale from Macy’s for a mere $39.00. Read More »

Celebrity Chic On the Cheap: Let’s get Preppy One More Time

October 23rd marked Brit’s 10 years since Hit Me Baby One More Time hit radio stations and 7th grade girls dance routines nationwide, starting a school-girl frenzy. Everyone wanted to act, dress and be Britney (until she shaved her head and started walking around barefoot, that is). And this past year, Gossip Girl brought back the school-girl prep, showing us that What’s Old Becomes New Again, much like the current fads of 1990s flannels and studded belts.

So, in honor of this still-cute prepster look, which is in stores everywhere, I bring you this weeks Celebrity Chic On the Cheap: Let’s get Preppy One More Time. (Wow, I am so creative with words.) Read More »
