New Semester, New Beginnings

Now that the New Year’s Day
hangovers are a thing of the past,
it’s time to trade in the warm sofa
for cold, hard desks as the spring
semester approaches. If you are
wondering how you will possibly
make it through this semester after
barely
making it through the fall semester
you are in luck, because a new semester
brings new beginnings.

Top 5 Things You MUST Do In College Pt. 2: Know Your College Town Beyond The Pub Crawl

applepicking.jpgThe following is the second of a five-part series I’m calling “The Top 5 Things You MUST Do In College.” Everyone’s already heard about buying flip-flops for the shower, stocking up on veggies to avoid the Freshman 15, and to steer clear of mojitos before midterms, but there are other tips for enjoying college that the experts might have neglected to tell you about.

This series is meant to provide advice for getting the most out of college, rather than just getting through it. So far we’ve already discussed having a professor as a BFF, and now we’re going to explore the college town…beyond the pub crawl!]

College is a learning experience that extends outside classroom walls. You’re not just amassing knowledge from textbooks, but learning how to manage your time and live on your own. It sounds corny, but it’s true. And one aspect of learning at college that many tend to overlook is learning about your surroundings: your college town.

You may know the basic landmarks (the freshman bar, the frat bar, the upperclassmen bar, the jock bar), but if your only contribution to the local economy is your weekend drinking cash, you could be missing out on much, much more. Whether you go to a small college tucked away in the hills, or a major university in an urban jungle, there is sure to be something exceptional about the land just off campus. Read More »

OMFG: Is LC Leaving The Hills!?

lauren-conrad-joans-on-third-03.jpgI’m having a breakdown. I can’t breathe. OMG. I am so upset I am eating a slice of cake.

Could the rumors be true?
Is Lauren Conrad packing up and moving out of The Hills?

LC recently stated, “It’s coming to a point where I love this show so much, but I’m ready to kind of walk away. I’ve been doing it for five years now. Five years on TV is a really, really long time.”

True story, LC. Not to mention the fact that the show is slightly unbelievable these days. Come on; why are you still going to school? You just presented a freaking EMMY! How is the show your real life when you are a celeb in real life, not a struggling college student interning for a monster? And it is kind of annoying that we are all forced to pretend to wonder what happens with you and your friends/boy toys when you are all over the gossip mags/websites/etc.

But still - I am totally crying.

If Lauren leaves the show, that means there will be. no. show. And that means that I will have nothing to live for (besides Gossip Girl, Ugly Betty, and The Office, of course). Who will I tear apart every week if Heidi and Spencer are no longer on TV? How will I feel better about myself if I don’t have Stephanie Pratt to compare myself to?

How will I go on?

A Love Letter to the Upper East Side

prada.jpgDear Upper East Side,

I’m writing this letter with sadness in my heart and hot fudge in my hair. I’ve spent the last two months scooping your ice cream and ringing up orders and now its time for me to go home. But even though I must leave, I wanted to spend a few final moments reflecting on our time together.

Like remember all those times when you came in with your Blackberry in one hand, your Bugaboo stroller in the other, and you didn’t even look up from your phone to place your order? I always respected you for your determination to complete your conversation, even if it sometimes meant you couldn’t make eye contact with me.

Or haha, I’m cracking up about that time I gave you two cents in change and you held your hand out waiting for it so you could put it back in your Prada wallet, which you shoved into your Fendi bag instead of the tip jar. That was a great time. Read More »

An Intern Thing: The Internship is Over…What Now?

headshot-bw1.jpgIt’is the beginning of August. Everyone is wrapping up their summer internships and getting ready to begin the new school year. Before you leave your internship, make an effort to schedule a 10-minute meeting with your internship supervisor and any executives you have helped out or done work for. You need to get some “face” time with these employees.

The goal is for you to get just enough face time for them to remember you when you send them an email two months down the line. Don’t be scared to ask for this meeting. You have a 50/50 chance they will say YES. And if they say NO, not a big deal. Think of it as an added bonus if they let you.

If your employer does agree to sit down with you, have a list of questions prepared. You want to learn as much about the executive in the 10-minutes allotted as possible.

What to Say and Do During Your “Exit” Meeting From You Internship

1. Make a list of questions to ask your employer before you meet with him/her

2. Go in the meeting with a notepad and pen Read More »

CC’s Expert Series: The Intern Queen Is Coming!

intern-queen.jpgGetting jobs/accepted to grad school is harder than ever. There is so much competition these days that good grades and being Sorority president are not enough anymore. It is all about the internships.

Need an internship? Don’t know where to start/how to find one/what the hell an internship even is? We are here to help.

Well, not us, but someone who knows this stuff.

Lauren Berger, an internship connosiuer will be coming to CollegeCandy to share her expertise with you. Why Lauren? What does she know? Well, this is what she has to say:

Internships were my favorite part of college. I was completely bored in the classroom. I was a communications major. How many times can you learn about the different communication models ? Blah, Blah, Blah. Internships were my window into the real-world – my way of peaking into the future. I got to experience real people, real experiences, real situations, real tasks, real challenges, and REAL OPPORTUNITIES. I am called “The Intern Queen” because I had 15 internships in college. That is why I am so passionate about internships today; I need to educate current students about the importance of internships.

Fifteen!? Good God. This woman knows her stuff. The Intern Queen even has a website devoted to helping you find your dream internship! So, look out; this chick knows everything there is to know and she is gonna share it with you!

CC’s Secret Intern Diary: The Rage is Boiling Over, or, Can I Quit Yet?

244161260_1cf5e079b1.jpg[When CollegeCandy put out a request for a Secret Intern to write an Internship Diary, we got some truly cringe-inducing stories, but “Elisa’s” experience trumped all.

Currently, “Elisa” is interning for a big, flashy 5th Avenue designer. Sounds awesome, right? Well, read the third installment HERE, and then read on…]

I’M FINALLY FREE!!!

I wish I could say from the intern sh*t, but I was actually stuck in a tiny elevator with 6 people for 45 minutes.

Why? because we were all waiting for cake.

All for a freaking piece of cake on the day I was supposed to start my “diet.” I swear this place does not help me out one bit.

I wish I could say that this place is as exciting…what with today and the elevator fiasco, but I honestly don’t know how much more of this useless crap I can handle. Read More »

CC’s Secret Intern Diary: Interning for “The Designer”

resale_stores.JPG[Everyone’s had that internship. The one that sounded awesome but ended up being awful. I had that internship. I thought I’d be reading scripts and doing coverage, but instead, I was leaning over a rickety filing cabinet for 5 hours every day, filing bullsh*t as big Important People stepped over me and constantly forgot my name. I also went on errands for necessary things like laundry, cappucinos, dog food, and cardboard boxes. It was truly a monumental waste of time.

Judging by stories from friends and colleagues, I know I’m not the only one who’s done something stupid in the name of free, resume-building labor. When CollegeCandy put out a request for a Secret Intern to write an Internship Diary, we got some truly cringe-inducing stories, but “Elisa’s” experience trumped all.

Currently, “Elisa” is interning for a big, flashy 5th Avenue designer. Sounds awesome, right? Well…read on.]

“What are you doing this summer?”
“I’m a marketing intern for a designer on 5th ave.”
“No way!! You’re so lucky.”

Yup. That was me. The “lucky” one. Little did I know I was in for a whole different ride. Read More »

Bliss Beauty Blowout - Ends Tomorrow!

wb_441_8_blowout_sale_01.gif

Ugh. The weekend is so close we can taste it (it=beer). Unfortunately, though, it is still a full day away and as much as you want to love your summer internship, filing/making Starbucks runs for 8 hours a day for no pay makes everyone grumpyThursdays suck.

Well, we have some news to brighten your day! Bliss, makers of some of the best beauty products on earth, is having a massive blowout sale. Like 80% off, massive. That is cheap enough that even an unpaid intern can partake. And it isn’t just the crappy stuff no one wants that is on sale (like those half yearly shenanigans over at Victoria’s Secret).

They have my all-time favorite exfoliation set on super sale, not to mention some amazing relaxation products and some really cute accessories! Read More »
