New Semester, New Beginnings

Now that the New Year’s Day
hangovers are a thing of the past,
it’s time to trade in the warm sofa
for cold, hard desks as the spring
semester approaches. If you are
wondering how you will possibly
make it through this semester after
barely
making it through the fall semester
you are in luck, because a new semester
brings new beginnings.

Christmas in November: Is That Really Necessary?!

redcup.jpg

It’s back!

After trying a few months of looking at the positives in life, I decided to put a halt to my weekly rant “Is That Really Necessary”. There is already so much negativity out there that I figured I didn’t need to bring anymore attention to it all. But I couldn’t help but get irked over this… and I am sure many of you are feeling the same.

Is it just me or should it be December 25th right now? Don’t get me wrong. I love Christmas. I don’t even celebrate the holiday but I find myself more excited over Christmas specials, Christmas decorations, Christmas drinks at Starbucks, and sitting on Santa’s lap (creepy?) than my Christmas celebrating counterparts.

But people, (and by people, I mainly mean people of the radio and retail worlds) Christmas music already?! What is that about? How many weeks of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” can one person endure? Stores have been carrying Christmas goods and decorating their window shops with candy canes and reindeers. Shopping bags and coffee cups have made the ‘holiday switch’. The cute little gingerbread men are being slaughtered- families torn apart in larger numbers because they are already on bakery shelves! I know its ‘tis the season to be jolly’… except one major factor: TIS NOT THE SEASON YET! Read More »

Is That Really Necessary?!

angerOh, how I love this column! Week after week I get to vent to all of you about the things that annoy us the most.

This week, I can answer my own question and say no, this is absolutely NOT necessary.

E-mails. What a great way to send someone a note, or perhaps tell them how you feel. Text messages, phone calls, even private Facebook messages are fabulous avenues for two-way communication.

Now, dear reader, please don’t think that I am not giving you enough credit by stating the obvious. I know that you are well aware of these communication methods.

So, can someone puh-lease explain why, if you and I understand how easy it is to send a private message to tell someone how we feel, those in a relationship must shout it out Leonardo DiCaprio style on the tip of the Titanic?

Thankfully, that ship sank. Wish I could say the same about the love notes posted between couples on Facebook walls.

We get it. You are in love. We know this because your relationship status says so. And that’s great for you. Embrace it! Shower each other with gifts and pet names!

Just don’t write paragraph long wall posts day after day proclaiming your love to “snuggle-button”, recapping your “incredible” weekend together and how you are counting down the minutes (three thousand four hundred and twenty-two to be exact) until you see each other next. Read More »

Is That Really Necessary?!… Numero Dos

screaming girlWelcome back to my weekly rant on all things bothersome. Things that we all experience, that we often think: “Whyyyy?? Is that really necessary?!”

This week: claiming rights to a band.

Example: The Fray, Maroon 5, Corinne Bailey Rae, The Backstreet Boys, Jesse Palter, Madonna, Ok-Go Tally Hall.

Some of these musicians you’ve heard of- some maybe not… some are or were huge stars, some are unsigned. Yet, if you listen to any of these artists’ songs in front of another person a conversation like this will ultimately ensue:

You: “How good is this song?”
ITRNO (Is That Really Necessary Offender): “Oh, this song? Yeah, this song is good, but I’m so sick of it now. I started listening to The Fray loooong before they were signed to a major label and way before their CD was available to the public. In fact, I knew every single word to this song before they even wrote it. So, ha! I am so cool. Way cooler than you because I listened to this band first.” Read More »
