Is sarcasm the unibrow of a woman’s

Grad School: Is It For You? Choosing a School.

research.jpg

Last week, I warned you that the grad school application process is quite a time consuming effort. Well guess what folks? You’re going to need to put ample time into choosing your prospective grad schools too! Sure, this might seem a bit obvious, but this columnist doesn’t always think things through.

For me, grad school was a roll of the dice, and six possible schools came up for me: Georgetown, Rutgers, Ohio State, North Carolina State, San Francisco State, and the school I eventually chose, hereafter refered to as X University.I chose these schools on a whim. Georgetown was my “reach,” and the closest I could get to Ivy League while maintaining a glimmer of hope for acceptance. Rutgers was relatively close to my hometown (by close I mean a 5 hour drive); Ohio State is a party school notorious for it’s tailgating parties (I swear, that’s why I applied- don’t judge); North Carolina State was an hour from my only other friend attending grad school; and San Francisco just seemed like a cool city to live in, as did the location of X University.

Rule number one in choosing grad school? Don’t be superficial when planning your future! Read More »

The New Don Imus: Bigger, Better and…Blacker

don imus

Eight months after radio-host Don Imus used racial slurs against the Rutgers Women’s Basketball teams he’s back on the air - and he’s not racist anymore! Promise!

Imus (and the heads at RFD-TV, no doubt) must have thought it would be a great idea to prove his non-racial stance by hiring on not one but two black comedians. (We are only calling attention to their race to prove how “un-racist” we are here at College Candy.)

Diversity has a name, or two names in this case: comedians Karith Foster and Tony Powell. Foster is a Jewish/African-American/Texan who graduated from Oxford (JACKPOT!) and Powell is…an African-American comedian!

Don Imus, African-American sidekick(s), continued wisecracks and controversy - sounds like the show is extending an olive-branch towards its infamous rival.

Will this act of unity (and comedy) scream heavy-duty marketing or turn this never-ending controversy on its ear? Tune in to WABC-AM (or RFD-TV) and find out.

Slutty Behavior = Friendliness?

24388319.jpg

Everybody thinks they totally understand slutty people. When we hear about a guy or a girl who has a knack for falling into other people’s beds, we all immediately become psychologists.

They don’t like themselves. They’re looking for acceptance, a father figure, someone to mother them. They’re afraid of love, of commitment, of being appreciated—I mean, I could go on for hours.

But what if a lot of our promiscuous peers were just…friendly?

A new study by “Patrick and Charlotte Markey of Villanova and Rutgers universities, respectively,” sheds some interesting light on personality traits verses licentious actions. It seems that people who get around are either “cold” (as in distant, bitchy, and emotionless) or “warm” (as in friendly, nice, open), with “very few people falling in between”. Read More »

Who Says Romance is Dead?

romance-final-1.jpgSure, the perfect romantic evening for me would entail sitting on the couch with my boyfriend, eating fried chicken, drinking cheap wine and watching American Idol (that Simon just makes me wanna cuddle!). But, that’s just me. Call me naive, but I truly believe that romance still exists, even with all the crappy guys out there in the cruel, cruel dating world.

Among all this week’s paternity tests and ignorant and racial slurs, there have been several uplifting stories of romance sure to make up for the recent lowlights.

Take Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. They’ve been together ever since they met during the filming of The Notebook; only like, the most romantic tear-jerker of our time! I watched that movie by myself, and went into it thinking, “No way am I going to cry. This ain’t no Titanic.” By the end, I was a sobbing mess.

There have been rumors of a wedding on and off now for a couple of years, but now mags like Us Weekly have been reporting that these two really good-looking Canadian love birds are actually getting married this time. Even cuter? They grew up in the same ‘hood, but didn’t meet until The Notebook! They probably passed eachother on the street all the time as kids, but fate eventually took its course.
