PLEASE Change the Station: Songs You Hate to Love (or just hate)

ccmusic.PNG

You know how it is; you’re in the gym and, even though you’ve forgotten your iPod, the radio station that’s playing has a pretty good range of songs and you have a good beat going. Or maybe you’re in the car, driving along and blasting the stereo as high as it can go. Or maybe you’re not even moving. Maybe you’re just chilling in your room. But, inevitably, that one song some comes on.

You know precisely what I mean. THAT song. That song that you just can’t stand. That song that makes you want to storm out the room or change the station or maybe even kick the stereo system. It’s like nails on a chalkboard, and all you want is for it to end. Yet, you know all the words, even though you hate admitting that to yourself. Somewhere in the deep recesses of your brain – and you would never admit this to anybody – you want to sing along.

Everyone has their own flame list. This is mine.

10. Warrant - “Cherry Pie“: Why is a song about pedophilia and incest so popular? Why is it a classic? Why is the video so creepy? Why am I so awesome at this song on Guitar Hero? Questions that may never be answered.

9. Timbaland (feat. One Republic) - “Apologize“: This title is misleading, because the word “apologize” never once comes into the song. “Pologize” does come into the chorus pretty often. I think it may be a synonym for self-pollinating your garden. Read More »

(Arguably) The 50 Most Bangable Chicks in Music

Let’s face it. In order to be a female musician, it’s a prerequisite nowadays to be considered hot. Unlike the guys, who can get away with looking like this or this and gorgeous girls will still screw them, women are a completely different story. It’s just the way things go.

So, with all of the ladies putting countless records out, who is the hottest? And what makes a “hot” female singer? There are dozens of lists of opinions; everybody’s got one. I happened to stumble upon one that caught my eye, if for no other reason than Madonna isn’t on it for once (I don’t care how “in shape” she is, people - she looks like hell. Eat a hot dog, woman).

Shoutmouth.com lists their countdown of the 50 Hottest Women in Music, and it goes by 7 different rules:

Rule #1 (The Madonna Rule): This list is based on recent hotness. It doesn’t matter how hot an artist was back in the ‘80s. It’s 2007. What have you done for us lately?

Rule #2 (The Hayden Panettiere Rule): To qualify for this list, an artist must be over 18 years of age. We only objectify of-age women here.

Rule #3 (The Newcomer Rule): Each artist must have released at least one full-length album prior to August 1st, 2007 in order to qualify.

2007 VMA’s, Let the Games Begin

beyonce and shakira

Yup, the list is out. MTV’s annual VMA noms have been released, and the list looks a little…repetitive, if I do say so myself.

And um, lame. Did I mention lame?

Of course you’ve got your Kanye and Justin, Rihanna pops up a lot, and at least there’s a little justice in this world- Amy Winehouse is on the list, but did someone fail to notice that the Plain White T’s, Hey There Delilah came out last year? This year’s “sudden hit” was a re-release. Cheap. Read More »

Music Videos for the Elliptical

girl exercisingLast summer, thanks to my posh hometown gym, I got into the habit of watching television while working out on the elliptical. MTV reality shows, mostly. But then I returned to school and found that music alone just wasn’t doing it for me anymore. Without a visual distraction, my daily cardio was just too boring. And when I read magazines I slowed way down. So I spent the fall semester gaining weight and asked my parents to upgrade me to a video iPod for Christmas. That video iPod revolutionized my gym experience. (And I’m pleased to report that by extension, it also revolutionized my butt and thighs.)

Now that I’m home again, I can once again enjoy the luxury that is a personal television on each piece of cardio equipment. But now I’ve discovered that I don’t push myself as hard when I’m watching My Super Sweet 16 as when I’m rocking out to my music videos.

If you have a video iPod, I wholeheartedly recommend the following music videos, all of which are available on iTunes, to energize you on the elliptical or stationary bike. (After a terrifying experience that nearly spelled the end for my iPod, I cannot recommend watching videos on the treadmill unless your headphones have an exceptionally long cord.)

“Fergalicious” – Fergie
I like to start with this video because of the line, “I be up in the gym just working on my fitness.”

“Don’t Cha” (Busta Version) – The Pussycat Dolls

Not every video is good cardio material. First, I look for a quick, catchy beat.

“Promiscuous” – Nelly Furtado
Videos featuring the extremely toned bodies of female pop stars can be very motivating. Read More »
